Not yet, I was going to go to the NEFRA show but unfortunately I missed the closing date and it turned out I was needed to housesit for my mum while she was on holiday, they only got back late this afternoon, so I couldnt have gone as it would have meant leaving her dog and my collie on their own all day which wouldnt have worked, too long for them. Am going to the United Retriever Club open show end of January, am looking forward to going to some club shows next year.

I forgot you had all those pics when she was a baby, I havn't got any at that age as didnt have a camera then you will have to put them onto a disc for me so that I can have a copy. My little River, she must have been 10 wks there roughly, gosh hasnt time flown by, it does seem only a few months ago not nearly year and a half almost.

I have a fcr and used to have a pair but my male died last year. Currently we have a 7 year old female and are thinking of adding a male pup.

Hi all, I'm thinking of getting a flat coat, I have had two bitches in the past and have never had males. This might sound silly but I was wondering if anyone who owns a male might be able to shed some light on them, in particular whether they are 'highly sexed' (if you know what I mean) and whether they tend to get frisky and hump alot and whether certain organs show themselves?!
Any advice on boys would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Sherwood20. I had a male as my first flatcoat and he was an absolute joy. Yes he did get frisky and hump even after being neutered, but he only did it with other dogs, not humans and as he did it with males I took it to be a way of showing dominance. Like humans, all dogs are different and it would be a mistake to think you will have the same experience if you get a dog, but the bond I had with Zac was really special and if you can achieve a level of obedience you are happy with then I much prefer a dog to a bitch. They are more boisterous, willful and stronger than most bitches, but there is something about a male which I find most rewarding. If you are embarrassed by humping then perhaps a bitch would be best (although some bitches hump - like I say I don't think it is always just sexual, rather a way of showing dominance). The empathy I achieved with Zac was incredible and he was a great ambassador for his breed. He had limitless tolerance with puppies (and was actually a better "mother" than my female flatcoat was when she had her pups). He was known in the local area as the puppy socialiser and always enjoyed playing with new puppies in the area when he met them, even into old age. I have had both male and female and my experience is that males are more playful and less serious than bitches, but this can make them a bit more of a handfull. Like I say get the obedience and empathy right and a male flatcoat is an absolute joy to have. The understanding and "meeting of minds" is something you have to experience and difficult to explain. Does any other male flatcoat owner feel the same as I do

I love my male FCR and I love my female FCR. I think it is down to personal choice at the end of the day...

Thanks so much for your advice, its really helpful hearing from people who actually have flatties and know what they're like! I think i'm more open to either now and we're unlikely to stop at one - more than likely to get another in a year or two anyway but I feel much more comfortable having read your comments thank you. VERY exxcited about our new arrival!!

She's in Leicester, due to go and visit next weekend! 3 days and counting!!
Actually while i'm on here, I could do with some advice on behalf of my mother who has Molly, Molly has had a skin allergy since she was about 1 which usually starts as an ear infection and progresses to the insides of her legs, groin, paws and tummy, bless her she has such an awful time with it always scratching and looking so miserable with it. Shes been tested for food allergies and its not that so we think it might be an allergy to dust or something similar, the vet has always put her on anti biotics and steroids when it flares up really nastily but has recently recommended 'Atopica' which he thought was going to be a miracle pill however this hasn't kept it at bay either. I don't suppose anyone else has experienced this with theirs and whether or not anything worked?? Its just we're going round and round in cirlces going to the vet and never seem to get to the bottom of it!

Hi...am new to this site and am still looking round when I found this page. I have an 11 month beautiful black flattie called Ted. He has been prone to ear infections but they have not spread to anything more so far. A friend recommended - Mr W Watchman's EARCLEAR powder - which at present we use weekly and so far no more infections, whether this is due to the powder or just coincidence I don't know but Ted is certainly happier. He also had a tumor removed from his back at 7 months - he was given the all clear straight away but anyone alse had this so early I would like to hear if anything happened later in life. We are of course worried that this could reoccur,we are aware of the problems flatties have with lumps and bumps but were surprised he had one so early!

    Hello all Flatcoat fans

I have a 3yr old liver bitch called Brooke. A sweet girl, who enjoys her gun dog training, but hated the show ring . No surprise there as I am not overkeen myself

Nice to "meet" you all and look forward to reading about your Flatcoats.

I also have a lab who is 7, and a young cocker who will be out working in the beating line next season.

    Jac and the gang.
