Hi all, First time joining a dog forum! Looking to do a little research and also ask a few questions and learn whilst I'm here! A little about me, well more my dog. To cut a long story short my partner inherited a Staffy x pitbull some years ago whilst living in a not so nice area. He was rescued from a local shop where he was tied up all day. 10 years later and he's been registered with the police as a pitbull but deemed not dangerous. As many will know this means he has to be muzzled and on a lead at all times. He's a playful dog, with lots of energy, most seem to think he's about 2 years old as he just likes to act like a puppy still. We're looking at the idea of having a second dog, as this will our dog with some much needed socialisation. He's very good with adults, children and dogs alike when he is not muzzled. As soon as he's muzzled he gets very defensive towards larger dogs, but we believe this is a reaction based purely on fear as he cannot protect himself if required. Smaller dogs he just doesn't understand, and he's generally not interested in when out for a walk. When off the lead and unmuzzled (private property) he'll have a goo chase and play with nearly all dogs. Looking to get some advice on how we can introduce him to another dog that we'd look to take on, he'll probably need a similar size dog as he likes to play and has no idea of his own size or strength, so we'd like another staffy, are there recommendations for which gender to go for? Are two male staffys a bad idea or should we be fine with that? Thanks in advance
Hello Ads, welcome to the forum. I'm afraid that I have no experience of bull breeds, but if you have any doubts at all whether he would get on with another male, go for the opposite sex. I hope someone with breed specific knowledge might be along soon.
I had a bull terrier crossed with a staffie and she got on well with the other male dog in the house. So from my experince if you're not sure if two males will get on, i think you may be alright with one of each.
