Our Akita seems to have turned into a teenager !

Please, please tell me this is normal. Yoji, is a 6 month old Japanese male Akita. We were so proud of his progress and then one day he was acting worse than the day we brought him home
These are the things that have changed, they all used to be ' spot on ' Selective hearing, grumpy with SOME other dogs, when out walking barking at everyone & other dogs. Sniffing at everything and suddenly stops and becomes stubborn to ' walk on ’. It's awful when he barks at strangers, he can frighten some of them. Comments welcome, thank you in advance

Yoji has reached the "Kevin" age but will grow out of it. In his good time!

One minute puppies are such cute cuddly little wubbles who will do anything and everything for their new mommas and poppas...

...and then they discover "hey, I am not just a cuddle wubble I am ME. I am Yoji and I will start being independent. They do not all do it but when they do it is like having a different pup, but they do grow out of it so please do not worry.

Patience and ignoring his stubborn behaviour is all I can suggest. I am sorry that I cannot give you any other advice.

Yoji is being Yoji and he is just letting you know.

Love him for who he is, not how he is at the moment. And look forward to the future, not fret about the present.

When you see someone coming, short lead and get his attention on you before he kicks off, change your pace and just walk calmly/ confidently past, talking to him to keep his attention,or turn and redirect with toy/food.

Give it time but if that doesn’t work, then expose him at a distance that he is comfortable with, and reward with play/ treats or toys. Then inch your way towards the 'issue".

Do you walk him in harness or collar and lead?

    That makes sense, thank you
We use a harness, he walks really well on it, to heal and generally no pulling. In fact I smirk to myself sometimes when you see dogs taking humans for walks

Socialize him as much as possible. Get people to come up and pet him but let him know it's ok not to be afraid of people. My parents had a male Akita that was a bit of a brat nothing big until one day a strange lady hugged him and totally freaked him out. He became people aggressive it was a shame. But my last Akita a female we got her extremely socialized brought her to school events and all sorts of places to be around people. She was very stranger friendly and the best dog I've ever had.

Some dogs don’t like being petted/fussed by strangers.

Socialisation doesn't mean going out and playing with strange dogs and meeting tons of people. It means being exposed to new sights and sounds and learning how to behave around them. In many cases, that simply means learning to ignore them.

@GsdSlave Weeks ago I took on board what you said about ' socialising ' I now understand that Yoji doesn't want to meet everyone and all dogs, so, many times even if it looks as if it may be ok we just keep walking with ' no dramas ' which for me is a successful walk !
