Rhodesian Ridgeback question ... would you buy one without a ridge?

Would you buy a RR without a ridge .?

With no plans to show or breed and from a decent breeder...

Yes the un ridged ones don't carry a gene that causes problems (can't remember what) saw a docu a few yrs ago about it so I would actively choose a ridgeless ridgeback:grin:

Yes, You could try the breed club and explain you want a ridge less RR and they should be able to point you in the right direction.

You fancy a Ridgie then? :)

I always thought that the 'ridgeless' ones were the healthier and that the ridge was a fault that was bred into them but hey what would I know never having owned one or had the inclination to? Am sure someone on here will advise.

If I wasn't planning to show, I would certainly consider a ridgeless Ridgeback :D

No, because that is the point of the RR!

I would not buy a Blue Weimaraner or a GSD with drop ears, etc etc.

I like my dogs to fulfil the breed standard, if I did not, I would buy a mongrel.

And yes I KNOW that cosmetics do not affect character, but I have to look at my dog for a number of years and I want to look at something that pleases my eye.

(Now, anyone got a magic mirror?)

The health aspect mentioned is dermoid sinus and a Ridgie will either be born with it or not. It is more prevalent in ridged dogs but a ridgeless can have one also.........other breeds can be effected.

Ridgeless dogs are not healthier but are no less RR than a ridged one.

The ridge came from the local Hotintot (sp) hunting dogs which were bred with the settlers dogs as they were fierce hunters and not a fault bred into them.

I like this breed hunted behind a few before.

Edit: If I wasn't showing the dog or going to breed it I could care less ridge or no ridge if it makes a good dog.

my boyf would love a ridgie but it has to have a ridge. i wouldnt mind a ridgeless as its the look and type of the dog i like rather than the ridge and would be more interested in the shape of the head than semetrical crowns etc

only thing i dont like about them is the way they seem to grey quite young? round the muzzle

dark red wheaten for me all the way!
