    Symmetrical Hair Loss- any ideas?

    Hi All,

We recently brought home our new Frenchie Louie. He is very loving and playful. Eats and sleeps well, smart and attentive, and training is going well. I noticed that when we picked him up he had some symmetrical hair loss behind his ears. In the past two weeks the hair loss seems to have gotten worse, spreading below his ears onto his neck. He recently picked up giardia from the dog park and is being treated for that. He does have itching and it doesn't seem to have increased. We have also ruled out anxiety, as he has been very mellow. We are not sure if this is dietary or linked to allergies as we've only been feeding him for two weeks. Again this was spotted when we picked him up and seems to have been getting worse. Can anyone please shed some light on this, or possible treatment for our little guy?

Might be your dog is scratching that area a lot causing the fur loss.

Could he have had a tick bite?

Hope someone comes along with some ideas - if it's bothering him or if you're worried then the best thing would be to get a vet to take a look.

Welcome to you and Louie by the way - Frenchies are lovely dogs!

Thanks! we had him checked for mites, nothing turned up. He might be scratching at night, but seems to only scratch during the day. very odd.

Could be diet related I suppose - difficult for you to judge if you've only had him a couple of weeks.

Is it possible for you to ask whoever you got him from if it's a long standing problem? The rest of his coat seems fine. I wonder if something caused irritation - fleas or a tick which are no longer there but he keeps scratching it and causing damage.

Le's hope it is only during the day so at least he's getting a good night's sleep!

Has he been flea treated? That's one of the obvious causes

Vet check should come up with a more expert view

Have you checked his ears for mites? I notice that there is a small lesion on his right ear, so he must have had a prolonged scratch at that one. These mites are often transferred from cats, so if there were any cats where he came from, it wouldn't hurt to treat him with anti mite ear drops. Otherwise, the vet is the best option.
He is a lovely little chap. Welcome to Breedia.

Just a thought, but when did the collar go on and does he wear it all the time. Dogs do sometimes react to nylon.

It's a bit 'out there' but worth mentioning
