Loss of Bowel & Bladder control

I have a female Frenchie who will be 5 in October. Around 2 years ago she started walking like she was drunk and lost control of her back end, after a scan, blood tests and medication she got back to herself but we never found out why... two years on with no further problems she completely lost use of her legs 4 weeks ago. We have done a course of medication and she is back to full strength however this time she has no control of her toilet. She does it in her sleep, while she’s walking, she is completely oblivious to it too. In the morning her cage and her are covered. She is no longer squatting while out in the garden either so it’s almost as if she’s unaware she has to do it. We’re on our final week of medication and the vet has unfortunately said the other options are a 6k scan which may or may not find the problem or we are going to lose her. I am desperately trying to find something to try before we lose her.

I am very sorry to hear about your little Frenchie's problems but I do not think anyone here would be able to help you.

Loss of sensation leading to bladder and bowel control is probably due to damage to, or pressure on the lower spinal cord. An MRI scan might possibly show if there is anything causing is but whether it could be fixed by surgery or not depends on what the MRI shows, and all forms or surgery on or around the spinal cord carries a risk.

You do not say whether she was seen by a canine orthopaedic specialist or just your own vet but I would discuss this further with whoever saw her and I hope something can be done to help her.

£6000 sounds a lot for a scan! Perhaps this is your vet's estimate for a full orthopaedic referral - it is a lot to find if the condition is not cureable.
Have you thought about putting her into pads and pants? Although there can be problems associated with bitches wearing pants, (I'm thinking uti's and nappy rash), as she is young and otherwise well in herself, I think I might be tempted to try this for a while, and see whether this makes her condition more manageable.

Is there any way to make her an outside dog? That's what I would probably try to do if my dog developed an issue like this. It beats having to euthanize her or trying to spend money you don't have to MAYBE find a problem you can't fix. If she's an outdoor dog - the random pooping and peeing issue will be much more manageable. I think it's also better than her having to sleep in a cage where she's covered in her own waste each morning.
