Hello Guys, My wife and I are very interested in adding an Akita to our family. We both have grown up with dogs all of our lives: Boxers, Jack Russells, Shepards, Rottwiller, Beagles, Cocker Spaniels and even a Chow, but never an Akita. While doing research we have come across a few websites that suggested Akitas are not for families with small children. As Akita owners do you guys agree with that? We understand the necessity for socialization early and consistent training. We know that most dogs can be aggressive regarding food bowls and that we should be cautious when our children are around the dog, but wouldn't that be the case with any dog? Since we would be purchasing a puppy and are committed to training and socialization is an Akita be a bad choice for our two and four-year-old?
David - we had the same concern before getting our Akita. We have a 7 year old boy and got our Akita as a pup. He is 8 months old now and has shown no aggression toward anyone in the house, even when our son gets a little rough. He is very well tempered, however their temperament may change when fully mature, around 12 months. Akitas are a breed for experienced dog owners.
