    Collie Questions

Hey everybody! I am currently looking to gather as much information regarding rough collies. I am currently a graduate student but when I graduate and am situated I would love nothing more than to own a rough collie! When I was a very little boy I had a rough collie that I would walk on a leash by myself up and down our street and we were the pride of each others eyes. After my first dog and only rough collie I grew up with smaller dogs like the shihtzu and toy poodle with a few larger mixed breeds thrown in. I currently own a 3 year old beagle mix that I rescued last year from a shelter but I have always wanted to have at least 2 dogs and raising a collie from puppyhood would be amazing. I know that currently I cannot have a large dog due to my living situation however, I hope to move to a rural community after graduation and due to the field I am studying this shouldn't be a problem. I do know though that preparation is key and knowledge of a breed is power so I had a few questions. I know that I had a collie but I was very young at the time and don't remember much of the training and grooming aspects of it as my parents did most of the work. Keep in mind all of these questions are to prepare myself or help me do research over the next year or two prior to even considering getting a puppy.

Does anybody have any recommendations for reading materials to get?

Are rough collies good running partners? I wouldn't say I'm an avid "runner" but I am an avid jogger (2-5 miles, 4-5 times a week) I would love to run with my dog but my beagle has her nose to the ground constantly making her near impossible to walk when she chooses not to listen

Does anybody know of / recommend breeders in the United States? I have found a few that I could links but the breeders my parents got our dog from over 20 years ago are no longer breeding and/or living where they used to. I would like to possibly do agility competitions with my dog as well. I have done an agility class with my beagle but we don't compete and she would rather walk around the fence line at the dog park smelling things than perform the obstacles.

Are collies generally good with other dogs? My beagle loves being around other dogs and she is much happier when I go home to stay with my parents for visits because she gets the company of my parents toy poodle. She loves the dog park also. My fiance grew up with her parents breeding siberian huskys and while they no longer breed we could possibly have our beagle, a collie, and a siberian at the same time after we are established financially.

Hi Josh - welcome to Breedia :)

Sounds like you have your heart set on a Collie, I don't blame you they are stunning dogs!

Regarding reading up on them, check out the Collie profile here on Breedia: http://www.breedia.com/dogs/collie-rough

Also have a look through the other threads in this section, although many are old (moved here from Dogsey) they still contain good information.

Regarding behaviour, you generally get what you put in - so lots of socialisation will help ensure your dog gets on with other dogs.

Good luck with your search and keep us updated!
