Irish Blue Staffordshire Bull Terrier, looking for breeder.

    Hello everybody,

I apologize in advance if this is the wrong place for this thread, but I'm grasping at straws here.

I live in Norway, and Staffordshire Bull Terriers are still a rather uncommon race here, but more people are opening their eyes to these beautiful dogs.
I have been looking for a dog for a long time, and by accident I met someone who got an Irish Blue Staffordshire Bull Terrier and it was love at first sight :)
Before I could ask them in detail about where they got him, they where gone...

I have gone through dozens of different sites, but I'm kinda scared to make contact, as I have no point of reference when it comes to breeders and credentials.
This site looked like a place for people who really cares about dogs and has a good idea about what they are talking about.

So if anyone could point me in the right direction to some good Irish Blue Staffordshire Bull Terrier breeders, I would be forever grateful!

    Thanks in advance
    Best regards
    Cato

    Hi and Welcome to Dogsey!

You may well have trouble locating Breeders of Irish Staffords as they are not a recognised breed by any offical registration body. They are a breed Type rather than a breed in their own right.
Different countries around the world have implemented outright bans or restrictions on specific breeds, types and/or cross breeds of dog, laws which are known as BSL.

I'm not to sure about BSL in Norway, I know Norway has the 4 same breeds banned as the uk but not sure if they also go on Type like the UK does.
I would advise caution as these dogs usually don't have any paperwork and are often mistaken for Pitbulls or Pitbull Type.In the UK you have to prove to the authorities what breed the dog is which can be very difficult with no paperwork to back up your claims, not sure if the same would apply in Norway.

    Thanks for the information!

There are 5 banned breeds of dogs in Norway:
    American Staffordshire Terrier (Amstaff)
    American Pit Bull Terrier (Pitbull)
    Argentine Dogo
    Fila brasileiro
    Tosa
As long as the breed is not part of any of the above, its perfectly legal. I have checked out Irish Staffords and they are legal in Norway as long as you can prove the breed by proper documentation.

I know that English Staffordshire Bull Terriers are becomming more and more popular in Norway, so I assumed that Irish Staffords was just the same.. only Irish. I knew that they where somewhat bigger than the English Staffords, but I had no idea that they where an unofficial breed.

As that is the case for Irish Staffords, I guess I have to let that dream go.
But I assume that this is not the case for English Staffords?
Would anyone have any information about English Blue Staffordshire Bull Terrier breeders?

    Thanks in advance
    Best Regards
    Cato

    Your Welcome!

"English Staffords" as you call them are known as Staffordshire Bull Terriers. They do have all offical paperwork and should be granted an export pedigree by the Breeder and are recognised by other registration bodies in other countries.

Good reputable Breeders here in the uk tend not to breed for colour although the odd blue puppy will sometimes appear in a litter.Often the blues we see here are badly bred from BYB who are more interested in the money they can get from such a litter.

I would advise you to speak to Mr J Beaufoy Telephone Number 01299 403382.He will be able to give you excellent advise and will help in your search.

There are two kennels in Norway,
Dalstaff and Proudstaffs, may be worth chatting to them also.
Here are the links to there kennels
    http://www.dalstaff.no/
    http://www.proudstaff.no/

    Hope that helps ;-)

hello and welcome to the site.

Just to clear things up for you...Sal has given you some good information, and some god links.

The Stafford Bulll Terrier is not called anything else other than the Staffordshire Bull Terrier.... owners will shorten it to "Staffie" but that is all..

Any other name tagged on to the SBT will mean it is not a pure breed KC registered breed...i.e the American/Irish/Romany Stafford, , all these will be types...(xbreeds) and as Sal says can be a name unscrupulous people put to Pits , or Pit types here in the UK as they are illegal..

Some of the xbreeds will be registered to "clubs" (there own) not the official countries KC...

You will get people who will tell you differently (those with the Xbreeds)

It is after all up to you to decide, and as you dont have a ban on the "type" in your country..you wont have the heartache of having your dog taken off you... but beware of temperaments.... if you buy from an unscrupulous breeder.

If it is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier you are after , then you will not go wrong looking to the links a Sal has given... it will be a starting point for you... and hopefully those breeders will also be able to answer questions on the confusion of type.

P.S The breed caled the English Bull Terrier is a completely different breed to the Stafforshire Bull Terrier.

I should have known better than to write a post on here. I am talking from a rescue point of view NOT a breeding aspect. If there were less breeders, then the breed wouldnt be in the mess it is!!!

May I ask which rescue ?

You obviously lack knowlege about the breed, from your first line I suspect this is a wind up,please read the breed standard for reference. They are not barrels on legs and I find that remark quite offensive.Neither is that stated in the standard.Taken from the breed standard,
    General Appearance
Smooth coated, well balanced,of great strength for his size.Muscular, active and agile.

Blue IS a recognised colour within the breed,it is also written into the standard, there are some good blues been shown at the moment, one of them been Valglo Singing The Blues.
    Taken from the breed standard,
    Colour
Red,fawn, white, black or blue or any one of these colours with white.Any shade of brindle or any shade of brindle with white.Black and tan or liver colour highly undesirable.

Again for your reference taken from the standard,
    Size
Desirable height at withers 36-41 cms (14-16 ins),these heights being related to weights.Weight dogs 13-17 kgs (28-38 lbs) bitches 11-15.4 kgs (24-34 lbs).
Notice Desirable Height, this is not set in stone and some dogs are over the height of 16 inches, including a CH dog,Knockon Dance With The Divil JW.

I disagree,if you do your homework and find a good breeder recommended by the breed clubs, they will come with all the relavent paperwork including certificates of health testing.

They still are fantastic dogs, any crossbred dog can be unpredictable, yes there are plenty of SBT crosses around, the same as most other breeds.

This is about the only statement I agree with,if you are going to post please make sure you state the correct facts about the breed your talking about!

    The Stafford is not a

" short-legged stumpy thing that resembles a barrel on legs"

They should be 16 " and of great strength for their size,FAT does not mean it is strong.

General Appearance: Smooth-coated, well balanced, of great strength for his size. Muscular, active and agile.

NOT short and stocky NOT long legged type
There is a standard and this is what breeders should be breeding to.

A 16" dog should weigh in at 38lb and bitches at 34lb tops.

Look up The Kennel Club Breed Standard for the SBT.

So many people make it up to suit them or sell their pups.

Also HEALTH should be at the top of EVERY breeders list.

Health issues for the SBT are DNA test for L2HGA and HC.
And eye screening,by specialists, for PHPV and PPSC.

    Dont leave it to chance.

I was referring to the breed, not from a Breeders or Rescue point of view!
The breed is not in the mess it's in by those that breed responsilbly,it's a mess because of BYB's,those that don't have the first clue about breeding or the knowlege of the breed.
You gave all the wrong information which could have put off prospective new owners adopting a SBT from rescue.

As I said if your going to post please make sure you give the correct information about the breed your referring to.

I think you`ll find `rare blue irish staffs` in just about any free-ad newspaper, unfortunately. No pedigree, puppy pack, sight of (real) parents, breeder support, insurance, registration, follow-up, home-check......
but there we are. Nice colour, eh?

    Totally agree,

Kizzy's Dam and Grand dam are both Blue bitches but both very well bred, both were mated back to black brindle dogs, not blue's.

Her breeder is well respected in SBT's and litter's sold usually before they are born. They have bred some excellent dogs over the years, one of which holds the breed CC Record.

Now to find a well bred Blue SBT at the going rate of what SBT's sell for - that's rare!
