Is a Mini Schnauzer the dog for me?

I have a 'big' birthday coming next month, and my Hubby has asked what I would like. What I would really, really like is a Miniature Schnauzer. As you can see we already have two miniature dachshunds - one Long Hair and one Wire Hair. Do MS's live happily with other dogs? and what about children? I have three of those. I would like anyones honest opinion before I start dropping him some hints!

the best thing about minis is that they are so adaptable:grin: , they will walk as much or little as you like good with dogs and are a really sociable little breed, they are also very intelligent but do have a tendency to be greedy and with those sweet eyes its hard to resist them so you do have to watch their weight.Their coats do need regular attention though so please consider this, whether being clipped or handstripped they should visit a groomer every 6-8 weeks and you should brush their feathering/beard regularly between appointments. They are a fab little family dog and I couldnt speak more highly of them  We have always had minis and I'm sure Minihaha can fill you in with anything else I might have forgot to mention,:) Nicky x

One of my sisters relatives has one and he is apparently a wonderful little dog - its a breed that I would quite like to consider if ever I have another dog as company for my Bichon. My daughters friend has one too and it is left on its own for most of the day I think until her friend comes home from school and it seems to have adapted well. Yes I would say go for it

Hi LongDogLady :) in common with most dogs if Minis are socialised with other dogs and children at the puppy stage they will get on well with both.

If you do decide to get a Mini it is important to buy one from a reputable breeder and to make sure all the necessary health checks have been carried out on the parent (puppies can be tested for the congenital form of PRA at 6-8 weeks so you should try to buy a puppy that has been tested). You can obtain a list of approved breeders who agree to abide by the code of ethics of The Miniature Schnauzer Club by contacting the club secretary, if you would like the address send me a PM :) .

Thanks to all who replied to my post regarding a Mini Schnauzer.
I have contacted the MS club Secretary for details on Breeders/Puppies etc. All that remains now is to drop Hubby some pretty heavy hints  - wish me luck!!;-)

Following my earlier post about a mini Schnauzer - I got my birthday wish and here is Pilot.

He is a pepper and salt mini - very cute and very cuddly. He is 12 weeks old and packs a lot of personality into his little body

My next challenge is how to walk three dogs :?

Here he is with Mini Dachshunds Diezel (cream LH) and Maximus (WH)

Congratulations, Pilot is a beautiful pup. Having two standard schnauzers of my own, I'm quite partial to the schnauzer breed. :smt001

Minis are the best dogs I've ever seen. My Bear is awesome with kids, and sees them as play mates, and she loves new people who gives her attention. They are super smart, and they don't shed. My only small complaint is that they can be stubborn, but as long as you put your foot down, you'll do fine with a Mini.

Oh, one thing though, we had a 10 year old Cat called Thomas, and Bear kept chasing after him, and got very jealous if we ever went outside to stroke him. Eventually we had to rehome Thomas and gave him to my Sister who has another Cat anyways.

Schnauzers, are 1 of my favourite breeds as little breeds go but obviously you have 3 choices min, standard and giant and i like them all lol, my first dog or dogs were schnausers when i was a kid my parents bought 1 that cost alot of money well bred, but even so he was short lived i was absolutely gutted, but a year or so later we got another 1 called eric the first was called claus lol, they are a terrier breed as u probably know the standard is great as well my aunty had 1 and the giant would be better at guarding you, but all 3 are great loyal characters and thats what i like about this breed is character a tough little dog thats loyal and funny, the only draw back we found was keep getting them clipped but you might as well learn that your self and save time and money, and it would probably be enjoyable,
