Does anyone know of any? Or even where I should start my search? I've been looking but finding it all a bit overwhelming to be honest. I've also got the language barrier to contend with which isn't helping. We're halfway between Hannover and Hamburg and while we would be willing to travel to some extent we are a bit limited due to me not being able to drive and hubby not able to get much time off work. We can't travel at all at the moment due to our money for winter tyres going to pay Ruperts vet bill but there's nothing stopping me looking into breeders. We've also been told that many breeders are very reluctant to home to British military due to so many of them abandoning their dogs when posted elsewhere.
Smokeybear may have some contacts...failing that...might be an idea to contact some good UK breeders, and see if they know of any in Germany. Would you UK vet give you a reference?
Hadn't thought of asking UK breeders What exactly is meant by a vet reference? See, told you I was a complete noob to all this :?
Hi, I can give a list of reputable breeders if you like in Germany, not sure of my geography though, but I can certainly vouch for some of the stock that I have seen. Have to do it later on this evening though.
Would certainly appreciate it Smokeybear. My geography isn't great either but there are maps We'd travel for the right dog, it would just take more arranging than one an hour or two away.
Confused isn't the word. So far I've seen dogs who want to paint oil, who want to run magnets and all sorts of bizarre things. I presume these are mistakes in translation. I usually end up sitting here looking baffled for a while then going off to relax over my cross stitch.
PMSL...cross stitch...Sarah you need a dog! I shall post Kerrie out to you first thing...she is being a royal PITA right now...she's all yours xx
I am so excited that you are thinking about a workline As I think I have said before Dyane (JoedeeUK) has a friend who breeds workline GSD in Germany, but unfortunately I don't have a clue whereabouts they are in relation to you. Hopefully Dyane will come onto the thread and help. I was also going to suggest SB ;-) I know that Kirschental have a good reputation. They breed herding GSDs. http://www.kirschenbach.de/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=1 I will also ask the breeder of my workline whether she could recommend anyone over there. Very exciting :-D
Such a shame you aren't in the UK right now, as there is a 15 month old dark sable workline after a 5* home. He is stunning and has already had all sorts of foundation training put into him. If only I had the time and the room .... LOL!
I did cross stitch when I had a dog, I find it keeps my hands busy and stops me stuffing my face while watching movies There are some awesome dog related charts too. Thanks Moobli, I keep seeing all the dogs up for rehoming in the UK and wishing we'd gotten a UK posting. At least then we could be sure of being able to speak the same language as breeders and the people in rescues!
My friend, Petra(have known her 30 years next year !), lives near Frankfurt & speaks excellent English. Her website is here, her dogs are reared naturally I think & I can definitely vouch for their temperament & character(they have to have all the health tests done before being bred from obviously). She is a lovely person & very knowledgeable about GSDs. I think the problem with German breeders selling to "foreign"service people was more before the pet travel scheme came in as it made it very expensive to import dogs from abroad-now it's only the cost of the rabies vax.
Thanks With getting Spencer we'll have to put off a pup for the time being but I've saved websites to my favourites. We're supposed to be in Germany for a few years so I shall keep looking into breeders. Unfortunately I've seen an absolute ton of pets being given up in the last month alone due to postings back to the UK despite how easy it is to get a passport for them and despite the army usually giving at least 3 months notice for a posting.
How sad, and I suppose it does make you perhaps appreciate a little bit how this could put breeders and rescue off UK army personnel homes :-(
It does, I can't blame them for not wanting to home to us when so many can't be bothered making arrangements to take the pet with them when they go back to the UK. Don't get me wrong, there are people who genuinely need to rehome their pets but many clearly say it's coz they're posted out of Germany.
