How does this Border Collie pup look?

    Hi All,
We are getting a new Border Collie, it was so difficult for us to choose a pup from the litter of 4 available pups..because they all looked so good.
My girlfriend and I chose one, and were starting to second guess if we made the right decision.

For some reason my girlfriend says the pup we chose has little eyes - I looked at the other pups and maybe she is right, or maybe she is crazy... do the size of the eyes actually matter?

Here is a photo: the pup we chose is on the right (2 photos), another pup in the middle, and one on the left... I guess I can see those ones having slightly larger eyes - but does that mean anything??

    Thanks

I could not see anything wrong with your puppy in those photos, but a photo is not ideal. Do you have doubts whether the puppy has normal vision?
Your girlfriend probably realises that Border Collies do have certain inherited conditions, and because of this it is always advisable to buy from a breeder who only breeds from certified health tested stock. Amongst these, BC's could develop the eye conditions of Glaucoma and Progressive Retinal Atrophy, (PRA), as they age, but with a young puppy, the chief worry is Collie Eye Anomoly, (CEA). Collie Puppies should be examined for this condition before 7 weeks as, unless it is a really extreme case, it can be difficult to detect after this time. If you are worried, I would book an appointment with a specialist ophthalmic vet. For further details see the BVA/KC/ISDS Eye Testing Scheme for Border Collies.

Hello Casey and welcome to Breedia :039:

Only one photograph showed from your link, with four pictures on it, the puppy you chose being on the right, showing normal size eyes, but as @CaroleC said, Border Collies do have certain inherited conditions.

Do you know if both the parents had been health checked? And have the puppies been checked for CEA before the age of seven weeks?

    Thanks for the replies!

The breeders have reassured us the parents are certified and health tested. Also the puppies should have been to the vet at least once already with no concerns communicated to us. The breeders also said they would have this puppy specifically checked for CEA, since I mentioned it.

I think most likely we are being paranoid about nothing. I really have no reason to suspect CEA, other than seeing it pop up on a Google search and remembering my Girlfriend saying his eyes looked little.Plus noticing he has a small discoloration near eye, which is probably just like a birth mark or something? Photo attached.

I just wanted to hear from some experts that I was being paranoid, and that there is no difference between a larger eyed BC and slightly smaller eyed BC (like, bigger eyes does not necessarily mean smarter - or anything, right??)

Video of us selecting the pup:

He seemed to be the most active in the group, which is why we picked him

I put more pics to be extra sure!

I love the way you describe him as "The Rowdy One" on the video - he is definitely an active little one! As for the photographs, Puppy #1 is looking up as the picture was taken, therefore his eyes were wide open and would seem larger. Because of his colouring, Puppy #2 it is not really possible to see the size of his eyes. Your puppy is looking in the distance, as though over your shoulder, therefore I would think his eyes are focused on that, so possibly not fully wide open.

Looking again [and again] at the photographs and the video, the puppy you chose has a white coat around his left eye, so possibly he has a light coloured eyelid - and that could make it appear that his eye/s are smaller than they are.

I have no idea knowledge about Border Collies so I cannot comment on the discolouration by his eye. I would ask the breeders to check with the vet if, as you say, they are going to have this puppy specifically checked for CEA. Why just him and not all the litter?

The video makes it look as if the dam has different coloured eyes - was that just the light? And did you see proof that both the sire and dam are certified and health tested?

Regarding eye size, not in BCs - Lexi, who was a small girl, had large eyes. Pereg, the girl in my avatar, who was larger being plus/minus 20kg, had small eyes compared to Lexi. Both were mutts of no known origin. Tikva, my current little booga [all of 5.7kg] is a Dachschund [dam] Minpin [sire] accidental cross, and she has very large Doxie eyes.

I think the eye on the white side just looks smaller because it has no black eye-liner! I can't pick up the discoloration, but flesh markings have no bearing on eye size or health. Wishing you the best of luck with your Rowdy baby, don't forget to call back with more photos as he grows.

To be honest, from the photo, I can't see a thing wrong with your puppy. He looks gorgeous to me.

Thanks so much for the reassurance guys.....

@Malka - yes the Mother has different color eyes....thanks for looking closely at the video! I will ask for proof when picking up puppy, but they seem trustworthy.

@CaroleC - good to know flesh markings have no bearing on health..I thought that was the case but just double-checking... would love to check back in with pics as he grows up!

@Chris B - awesome to hear, thank you!

Ten seconds into the video the dam was facing the camera and the different colour of her eyes were visible. Eleven seconds in she had started to turn and at twelve seconds only the brown eye showed. I had checked the video a couple of times, thinking maybe it was the light [or my imagination] but having checked it again, frame by frame, thank you for confirming that it was not my imagination! :)

Yes it was quite remarkable how different the dam's eye colors were... I guess it is desirable as the breeders said they hope the puppies eyes will do the same...

I do not care about looks though, more so about personality and intelligence... that is why I picked the Rowdy one, and got worried over what seems to be nothing

I don't know where the extra perfectly came from! This tablet does need to be carefully monitored. Sometimes it inserts the most stupid words and phrases, which it believes I must intend. At least this time, it wasn't too ridiculous.

He looks lovely to me. Of course, from a photo you can't be 100% sure, but he does look like a lovely, lively little Border Collie pup.

Thanks again guys - here is an updated video of him, indeed very healthy and so cute!

Now I need to be persistent with the training as I want him to be comfortable in outdoor, camping-type settings.. he is already so good though!

He is absolutely adorable and seems to be doing fantastically well for such a young puppy - what a delightful video of him :) Cats, dogs, following you, swimming - such a lot and he seems so happy all the time. Are the cats and other dogs also yours?

Have you decided on a name for him [apart from Rowdy!]?

Please keep us up to date with photographs, videos, and updates as to how he is getting on.
