My dog has fibroadnexal dysplasia on lip

Hello everyone. New to the forum and need your help. I have a beautiful 4 year old Weimeraner male. He has developed fibroadnexal dysplasia on the lip/side of his mouth. It's kind of large and thick and a biopsy has shown that it is NOT malignant. If you have had this on your dog can you tell me what you did to mitigate or remove it. Our Vet wants to perform surgery to remove the complete side of his mouth and stitch the area with extra mouth skin. Doing this will make his mouth much tighter and could pull his nose off to one side. Not good. The wife is pushing for surgery and I'm not. Not sure what to do :( Blu1.jpg Blu2.jpg

I had never heard of this but a quick google search suggests that various forms of this disease are not uncommon. If you are in doubt about the best way forward, you could ask your vet to refer you to a specialist for a second opinion.
I am so sorry for your boy, sometimes these non malignant conditions can be just as difficult to deal with as a true cancer. My 12 year old Beagle boy has just had his fourth operation to remove bowel tumours - they may be non malignant but that doesn't stop them from growing and causing problems! Best wishes for a successful outcome.

Thanks for the reply. We've already been to a specialist who suggested the radical approach. I'm so torn over this :(

Helidale and Chris B like this.
I wanted to follow up on this. My dog is doing so well after his procedure. We decided to do a debulk approach where they removed about 85% of the growth. The growth has not returned and what's nice is no one can tell the procedure was done. If anyone has this issue you reach out to me and I will get you in contact with the vet who performed this amazing procedure.

Thank you for the update John. (I am CaroleC, but using my alternative persona). I'm so pleased that the treatment has retained your boy's good looks as well as removing the problem growth. I hope that he has many trouble-free years ahead of him now.

I lost my brave old boy nine months after my answer to you. By that time he would prolapse several times on a short walk. Though he didn't show much pain, it just wasn't fair to continue any longer.

It's so refreshing to get up-dates

It's also so good to hear that the procedure worked and your boy has both retained his good looks (and he is lovely) and I imagine is way more comfortable with the lump out of the way
