Lovely dogs; when I was first researching which breed to get as a rescue I was in touch with a Trailhound Rescue and got as far as phoning Dogs Trust when three dogs arrived there. They are very energetic dogs and can also leap pretty high fences. Also frankly Dogs Trust were alas pretty unhelpful which was probably a good thing as I don't think I'd have been the right owner for this breed. Here's more info on the breed: http://trailhoundwelfare.org.uk/?page_id=13
Same here, I fell for them and looked into them for some time, even speaking at length with the welfare. However we would've not likely been able to offer it what it needed.
trailies are a fab breed there drive s less then a foxhounds smaller in weight but some can be same height asfoxhounds, they are normally likegreyhounds once worked they enjoy the lazy life, they are great with children and make great PAT dogs, Trailies not as busy as foxhounds, and looking at this photo i agree he is heavy for a trailie, the dogs trust will either something a foxhound or a trailie and have been know to swap details if it means the animal will get a home or a place in a breed rescue,
Thomas an old foster for Bw was a suspected trailhound they were contacted by trailhound rescue saying they had one of their dogs !! he hadn't however got a tatoo which they tend to have so he stayed with us and they put his info on their website as well he was wonderfull very gentle and extremely affectionate lovely dogs yes he loved his walks but was happy to chill once he had it !
We had a 3-legged Trailhound at our agility class once (yes really!). It had been injured whilst out with the pack on a hunt as it was the last one crossing the road and got hit by a car :-(
I adopted this boy in 2013 and sadly he passed away on the 17th May 2025, but this sad boy got his forever home and lived a full, loved and was well looked after.
How fantastic that you thought to update us after so many years. I'm so glad that he has had a long happy life. I feel for you, the pain of losing them is unbearable. Serena, are you Murf with an updated identity - or someone that adopted him through a connection with Murf?
Hi Carole, no I’m neither, I only came across this forum on Monday when I was goggling trailhounds images and as I was scrolling down and spotted my boy. I clicked on the image and was brought to this forum and after reading through the comments thought I’d put a little update on. The post was originally posted April 2012 and I rehomed in October 2013 from SHAK a sanctuary for abused and mistreated dogs in Northumberland. The back story I got was that he was a failed farm dog that was going to be shot, but got rescued and rehomed with a family but unfortunately he bit the child and was going to be put to sleep, but someone saved him and got him up to SHAK, early spring 2013. Where I volunteered at the time, I had lost one of my dog in March 2013 and walked Blais most weekends and in October 2013 I felt ready for another dog. It wasn’t easy at the start, as he was petrified of everything, a bus going by, a can opening. You couldn’t get near him in his bed for 18 months, he would bite if you tried to take him by the collar or cornered him, but we got there in the end. He turned out to be a great dog once he gained his confidence, very laid back easy going and accepted future dogs into house. He had a good life in the end, I work from home, so I was mainly home most days, where I live we have the beach 3 mile away, Cheviot hills 20 miles away and plenty of woods to explore, spoilt every Christmas as I don’t have kids and had the best that I could afford in foods, beds coats etc.
That is so wonderful!!! Amazing what unconditional love and support and patience can do for a "problem dog". Thank you for finding this post and providing an update. Hopefully Murky will chance by and it. As a rescuer, I can't express how much updates like this mean - to know that an animal who had such a rough beginning found a home who believed in him 200%.
Thanks for the additional info. He was so lucky to have found you. I hope his brother found a good home too. I don't think @Murf has been back for several years, it would be good if she could find this thread.
