I'm I the only person on this forum to have a Schnauzer - a standard - the original of the three sizes ;-)

Or am I just not looking in the right place

Hi Squiggs :) I think there are a couple of members with standards and a couple with giants too :)

Standards are on my puppy research list. I'm having trouble finding a breeder though. Giants and Minis seem to be quite common, Standards not so. Any ideas?

    Sorry I can't help much :-(
There is very little info about standards out there.

This maybe of help http://www.schnauzerclub.co.uk/index.shtml Although it's not very active

We were lucky when we decided to get a standard, we happened to spot an ad in our local paper - not a breeder just someone who had her bitch mated. But although the ad was in our local paper it was only because she used to live locally -we actually had to travel 100 miles to where she now lived to see the mum and her pups, and then go back two weeks later to pick up our little bundle of fluff.

Some things I would advise about standards is that they are energetic and very playful.
Squiggle (we named her that cos as a pup she was all black apart from a white squiggle on her chest - despite being a pepper and salt) needs at least two long walks per day. Ideally on these walks I like her to bump into other playful dogs so that she gets a really good run to try and wear her out. But however long the walk and no matter how much running around she does with her 'friends' she will insist that I play with her for at least two hours when we get home (shes 3 1/2 years now, with no signs of slowing down). It can be quite tiring and time consuming, but the rewards are great

I have a Mini Schnauzer - years ago I nearly got a Standard one but in the end got a Corgi!!

There were 2 male Standard Schnauzers near me, both were in double figures and owned by a man and his daughter. Both passed away recently.

They were handsome dogs - but their temperament was totaly different to my fun loving Minis.

My standard has a wonderful temperament - I think she thinks that it is her mission in life to play with as many other dogs as she possibly can.
She literally forces other dogs to play with her.
Sometimes I worry about her running over to other dogs to make them play but I guess she just gives off the right vibes.
On one occasion another dog owner told me that her dog hadn't socialised with another dog for 6 months because it had been attacked.
And another told me she had had her rescue dog for over a year and in that time it had never wanted to play with another dog.
Both times Squiggle insisted that they play and both times the play lasted a good 15 mins
She doesn't give up unless the other dog takes absolutely no notice of her or unless they tell her to go away.

Years ago I used to trim a Standard , he belonged to an Earl and used to arrive in a chauffeur driven Rolls Royce
He was quite a character .

Hope your new summer addition works out ok.
Please keep posting, as you can see there's not many standard owners on here.
Yours will of course have a tail, Squiggle had hers docked before we saw her. (She would have been amongst the last to have docked tails)
Do you know what colour you'll be getting?

I like standard Schnauzers too. We see one that is a black one sometimes.

I have 2 Kerry Blue terriers but they get mistaken for Standard Schnauzers as the comment I get most often is "My friend/neighbour/relative has one like yours in the small size" to which I reply "they only come in one size!"
