    Otterhounds.... what are they like?

No no, not for me, well maybe in the future;-)  A member of the family is thinking of getting one and I wondered what they were like and if they like other dogs and animals... I have seen one and remember her being immensely friendly and being HUGE:lol:

There's a local lady with a rescue one nearby. It's quite old and very mellow. I think they are lovely floppy dogs! If you don't mind a soggy doggy that is!

I thought they were rare too, with hardly any foundation stock?? I suppose they have researched them though, its just that every now and then the dog may meet one or all of mine....

They are delightful, friendly, sticky, smelly dogs and are not really for the normal household.

And yes, they are endangered, not too surprising as they are not ideal house dogs and are no longer needed for hunting.

You can have them as house dogs but it needs a special sort of devotion.

Otter hounds are on the vulnerable list... and they are there for a reason

    That being one of them....

But from what I have heard they are not ideal house dogs...

I would talk the the breed club to find out more in depth information on them

Does anyone on here own/owned one?

Being pack animals they are fine with other dogs, in fact I would go as far as to say they should not be kept alone they need the company of other hounds.

Do not and have not owned one but have met plenty, I am sure the Otter people will forgive me saying they are not the soundest of breeds, some of the conformation seen leaves a lot to be desired.

If they do get one, could you get some pics on here? They are definitely on my wish list for the future.

Otterhounds do have a certain aroma when wet - but there is absolutely no reason why they can't be wonderful house pets, given a reasonable amount of regular grooming. They are happy, friendly hounds that love children and other animals.

Why not suggest that your friends go and meet some at Discover Dogs next month?
