The RSPCA have had some Malinois pups handed in from a puppy farm - our breed rescue is desperately trying to find suitable homes for them, one of our members spoke to the RSPCA to find out more details and I am including this below Please note that thee pups will NOT make good house pets but will need to go to experienced homes only - to be honest this is our breed clubs worst nightmare - we could see it coming but hoped it would'nt ....
I do WT as well, I've just recently got a pup and the only other person I know in WT who was looking for one has recently commited to one - over to you SB! If memory serves me right (which it sometimes doesn't!) the WT website sometimes advertises dogs availabile for rehoming - might be worth chcking it out?
working trials world has a litters link - also a contact link not sure if they will put rescues on there, but nothing ventured - nothing gained!
A total nightmare, but, unfortunately, not an unexpected one. I had one or two calls re malinois in novice pet homes when I first moved here and the kennels they came from sounded more than dubious. Unfortunately, I never got to meet the dogs as I had a broken ankle, but the stories were disastrous. I wonder if the RSPCA have tried the prison service? Might be an outlet for them if not. Sad, sad, sad situation.
Thanks Mick and Brierley I'll try the WT world website - it sounds as if these pups have missed that all important socialisation period which of course makes things a whole lot worse - we have our breed club AGM coming up and I'm going to raise this as an item for discussion - I think we must get some commitment from the established working Malinois breeders/owners out there who I know are responsible themselves but seem reluctant to take on the responsibility of rescuing working Malinois when things go wrong - the committee of the BSDA of GB is wholly made up of folk from the show world who have taken on the task of rescuing all Belgians when required -but the scene has shifted and we desperately need input and support from the working world to support us when dealing with this problem .
Oh what a shame, poor dogs. I could repost this on a working dog forum I am on that includes police/prison and security dog handlers? Is there a contact name/number for the person dealing with these dogs? Would any of them be confident enough to make potential police dogs? I remember meeting my first working Malinois about 13 or 14 years ago. Back then the working folk were VERY selective about breeding, with few litters actually being bred and the pups that were went to working homes only. I did wonder whether the puppy farmers and less-than-responsible breeders would eventually jump on the bandwagon and start breeding and selling indiscriminately :-( It sounds like this is now happening. The working Mali is definitely not the sort of breed you want in inexperienced pet homes - or worse :-(
Thanks Moobli - our rescue co-ordinator is : Pam Jameson Tel: 01527 545552 E-mail: pam.jameson@gmx.co.uk
No serious competitor will want a rescue dog of ANY breed that is environmentally unsound, they have to be to compete successfully. Excellent socialisation and habituation is essential for Working GSD, BSD, Rotts etc so they can relax and concentrate on work. So that combined with unknown genetic background is not going to encourage the serious triallist to give one a home, especially if they only have room for one or two dogs and cannot afford passengers.
