My 131/2 year old westie has clearly slowed down over the past year. She has lost most of her hearing , has cataracts, and arthritis. Recently she has started peeing and pooping in the house. She had blood work done 6 months ago; essentially normal. My vet has her diagnosed as cognitive dysfunction (dementia); tried some gabapentin and Cbd oil; but the pooing and peeing is becoming a big problem; Any thoughts would be appreciated.
It is a sad time when our oldies begin to lose their grip on daily routine. You could perhaps revert to treating her like a baby puppy. When you are not petting or supervising her, enclose her bed in a playpen with an easily cleaned base, (eg. vinolay). Add an absorbent top layer such as newspaper or puppy pads, which are easily taken up and disposed of.
I totally agree with Carole. If it's become a big problem, you can't magically cure your dog, but you can accommodate her problems by making a few adjustments for her.
