Do dogs make social anxiety feel easier for anyone else?

I wanted to ask something that I have noticed about myself.

For some reason I feel much calmer around dogs than I do around people. When I spend time with a dog the pressure I usually feel in social situations seems to fade a bit. Dogs do not judge, they do not expect perfect conversations, and just being around them feels relaxing.

Sometimes when my anxiety is high, sitting with a dog or taking one for a walk helps me slow down and feel more grounded. It is almost like my attention shifts away from worrying about what people might think.

I am curious if anyone else experiences this. Do you feel more relaxed around dogs compared to being around people? If you have a dog, has it helped you cope with social anxiety in any way?

I could have written this myself honestly. For the longest time I thought something was wrong with me because I genuinely preferred my dog's company over most people. Turns out there is nothing wrong with us at all.

I went through My ESA Therapist about eight months ago, originally just to get documentation for my apartment. But the licensed therapist I spoke with through them actually helped me understand what was really going on. She explained that what I was feeling around my dog was not me being antisocial. It was my nervous system finally feeling safe. Dogs do not carry the social weight that human interactions do and for someone with anxiety that difference is massive.

My therapist through My ESA Therapist helped me see my dog not just as a pet but as a genuine part of my mental health support system. Getting my ESA letter made it official but more importantly it helped me stop feeling guilty for relying on him.

Since then I have actually gotten better in social situations too. Because I have that safe space to come back to, going out feels less overwhelming. My dog is like my reset button.

If you have never spoken to anyone about this, I genuinely recommend My ESA Therapist. They connected me with someone who understood the human animal bond deeply and did not make me feel like my feelings were strange or unusual.

Your dog is not a substitute for people. He is just really good medicine.
