    One proud Akita owner !

This is a first for us and it feels amazing.
He is 20 months old and I have always described him as “ dog aggressive “
On our walk we bumped into my friend who has two dogs, I asked her if we could continue walking with her and her 2 “ on lead “ dogs.
We kept our distances and all was well, when she got to hers she invited us in for a glass of wine. I was super nervous, but, we don’t get offers like that so we went in. It’s the first time Yoji has been in anybody else’s house, they also had a visitor. We kept all dogs on leads and 2 glasses of wine later we did a photo shoot.
There was one little growl from Yoji involving a toy.
All in all I’m delighted !
Yoji is the white one !

Let me take a wild guess, Yoji prefers white wine

He would drink either, but, I would have drunk muddy river water to have this positive experience
It so basic for other breeds, but, for an Akita owner it’s unbelievable

I am so happy for you and Yoji too!! Hopefully this is a moment you can build on and not a one time thing. When Bandit was a single dog I always came home happy from a walk when he found a dog who’s owner would let them play.

Enjoy the glow of your accomplishment (and the two glasses of wine too)!!

Every time I look at that picture, Yoji makes me smile as much as he is smiling!

I think it needs to be framed and put in an appropriate place on a wall to keep you smiling as well! :)

Has Yoji had any more opportunities to visit with other dogs again?

    Hi Marc
We have had a couple of walks with my friends dogs, pictured above, but no others.
What we THINK we have noticed that when we walk around places outside our streets/small village he seems to just ignore other dogs, we wondered if it’s a territorial guarding, basically he things the streets are his.
I do feel he is getting better in many ways. He’s great, I wouldn’t swap him as hard work as he is sometimes
    How is Houdini ?

I have found that Eddie always needs more space when meeting other dogs on streets or narrow tracks. I think this may be because he can see fewer opportunities for escape than when he is in more open country, and it may be heightened by knowing that he is restricted by the lead.
He is at his most relaxed when he is with dogs that he knows he can trust, (to provide back up?), like my friend's Bouviers. I just wish he had as much faith in Merry and me!
There are no problems when he is mixing with his own breed. There were1034 Beagles at Capesthorne, but of course his pack instinct probably kicks in, giving an instinctive feeling of security with his own breed.

I think it's probably more to do with socialisation. From birth he was socialised with his own breed (mum and siblings) so they are not a worry for him.

Rosie loves staffies which I believe stems from the breeder also having staffies so from birth she was interacting with them

HAHAHAA. Well he has only escaped the one time and only because there was a stray dog right outside his gate. He is being more territorial on walks... I don’t walk them near the ocean much anymore (maybe once every week or two) because I was sick of dealing with the off lead dogs, stupid owners and I’ve been working a different job the last 3.5 months and it’s just faster to drive up to the Xmas tree farm. However the tree farm is a gravel road in the woods so to him it’s much like walking up our dirt road so it seems like he thinks it’s his territory. We’ve also met off lead dogs up there so now when he sees a dog, on or off lead, he instantly takes a dislike too it. It could also be his age.. I think some of it is not walking near the ocean where he saw lots of dogs and I would say leave it and tug the leash a bit and they’d both just ignore the other dogs. One day we ran into three off lead dogs at the tree farm, he was ok with the first one, frustrated by the second one and up on his hind legs for the third one, pulling hard on his lead. This all happened within 15 minutes and since then he’s had much more attitude. So now when I see another dog there I generally turn around and find another path, the path of least resistance... I’m pretty frustrated with the off lead dogs EVERYWHERE I try and walk them. The Xmas tree farm ask people to walk dogs on leads and pick up the poop but most ignore both.. it’s very frustrating. I just walk the other way so I can enjoy the walk with them. Yesterday I took my phone with me and put in earbuds and listened to some 1970’s funk music!! I must have looked really funny if anyone saw me grooving to the music blasting in my ears, LOL

I think my dogs are the ones Eddie might want to escape from.. I always like a wider path to pass other dogs so they don’t meet.. Bandit was so social and friendly with most other dogs until I got Katie Mae, and I was very surprised with it because of his breed. He used to love going by the beach for a walk especially as a little pup, he got so much attention.

I’m often quite cross with off lead dogs and I sometimes wonder if it mixed with a bit of jealousy, if I could let Yoji off the lead I would like to think I would choose the right time & place to do so
I love to see him run and bounce about, but feel he is somewhat restricted due to his nature ,
We are keeping our eye out for some land to build a house and give him some place to call his own and frolic about

I too wonder what I’d do if I had a dog with good recall that I fully trusted around other dogs. But I don’t so it’s a mute point. I complain so much about off lead dogs that I’d like to think I’d keep them on the lead so as not to be a hypocrite.

I think that would be wonderful if you find some land to build on and give him a nice sized yard to roam about in!! Designing a house is fun too. I’d build mine much differently then what I’ve done, but I was only 27 when I started building mine and I know so much more now.. I may still build another small house on the other side of my property in the future, maybe... I do feel lucky that my dogs have a bit of space to roam about and chase each other, blowing up clouds of dust..
