He is gorgeous. There was a bitch very similar to him when we adopted Pepsi and I was so tempted but she had far too many problems for us to manage...
It's whelping of the pup that I find unbelievable especially as the Mum was the JRT. I take it he was the only pup?
I know nothing about Spaniels but my explanation would be that it is according to the job they are bred to do.
