Just personal opinion here: I think it's barbaric to dock a dog's tail. I didn't think it was allowed any more in fact - shows how much I know :)
I think LABRADORK makes a great point. The health tests are key. May I also humbly suggest that you remember having a dog is meant to be fun :)...
But they could just as easily have inherited the more 'challenging' qualities of both breeds..... As could the puppies mentioned in this thread :)
