Hi, I have a 10 year old bichon frise male that is healthy. I recently visited our vet and she recommended getting him neutered. I am nervous and worried. Should I get him neutered? She recommended neutering because she said they are less likely to develop certain health issues if neutered. Please help. Thank you.
There is no simple right or wrong answer to this question. While it is true that late castration can offer protection from male hormone - related illnesses, there is no certainty that your boy would have contracted one of these conditions anyway. I presume your vet will have given you the reasons why she is advising this operation for your dog, but, because this is a personal decision, I would do a couple of Google searches along the lines of, 'What are the benefits or negatives of castration in the older dog', to make sure that your decision feels the right one for you.
