Loukar isn't ill, that's what so awful about SM, we know he has it from the MRI scan, but he is asymptomatic(ie has no symptoms as yet), but every time he cries if he hurts himself or has even the slightest limp, I know it could be the start of SM symptoms, that is what is so cruel about SM

As too good breeders who do all the health tests in Essex, haven't a clue, one question to ask is do your dogs have current eye/heart certificates & have they been MRI scanned for SM, if the answer is no to only one of these then walk away, the more people ask about SM & refuse to buy from untested parents then eventually all breeders will realise that they have to scan, until the marker gene(s)are found. The latest I have on the DNA research(which is mapping the whole genome of the Cavalier)is that there should be a test in around 18 months to 2 years. All four of our Delhaze dogs gave blood for the research, poignant really as only two are left & at least three of the four have/had SM, Rikkie died from heart failure before he was seven so we will never know if he too had SM-he was half brother to Kaycee who had SM-so odds are that he had SM too

how are these people all breeding these dogs then if they should be having mri scans?

surely it should be a compulisve thing for them to do?

i mean surely one of the dogs must be healthy?! or is it s recent thing?

TBH lots of the top show breeders don't bother to MRI scan & have put their heads in the sand about SM. One of the top CC winners is SM clear, but as for the other top dogs, their owners/breeders are saying nothing. There are one or two honest top breeders, but they are very much the minority. The ones who don't have absolutely no excuse as they are well aware of SM(& Episodic Falling too)& still they do nothing.

Lots of GP vets aren't aware of SM & put it down to back problems or another neurological disorder. I'm lucky my vet was a student of Geoff Syrett, who is a world renown neurologist, he organised for Geoff to come to their surgery & present a seminar on SM-two surgeries didn't bother attending(& it was free)one which has been featured in the Vets in Practice BBC series & the other a pig headed vet who is so far up his own *** it's unbelieveable !

I've had hundreds literally of requests from pet/BYB breeders to use one or all of my boys at stud, I ask them about the health tests & SM & EF & they look blank & say-"My vet has said she can be bred from !" It's at this stage I put the phone down or walk away having made my point!

that is awful, if i was a breeder i would have Every single test done and look at temprement and if it was a example to the breed to follow on, not jsut bred for breeds sake :( *sigh*

I had a wonderful male CKCS and what a love. Got along with every person and animal. Woody wasn't at all terrier and more laid back but that is what made hime so endearing. Softest dog I'm ever owned too.

When I was looking, I was very aware of the health problems and asked the right questions I think. Anyway I fell in love with the pictures of a little female in Virginia. I didn't put a deposit on her until I would see her and also see her surroungings. I thought I better get there quickly before somes gets there first. Anyway she was adorable and very nice people, clean but no health checks to show me. They showed me something that was 10 yrs old of the male that they were using and was the sire but could show me nothing more recent. I left and felt I had been taken advantage of but my husband saw it differently and was so right.....the cost of the flight was nothing compared to the heartache and vet bill that could have been. Finally after another year we purchased Woody and he was worth the wait. I know you don't want to hear more of this but some will say (not many) that they have done the health checks and have not. Good luck in your search for your cavalier if that is what you decide. Also training has to be gentle. Joan

im not having much luck with the breeders, another one got back and said 'i only have one litter per year so i am not a breeder'

what the hell does that mean?!? and the pups are checked at the vet, i was like well what about the bitch and stud major health checkas (i listed the ones you said)

and i also said well you bred a litter from your dog...therefore you Are a breeder!!

    crazy!

lol well i know you cant show a cross dog, lol i havent been researching about dogs for over 5 years now for nothing!

and i have a cross breed now and i do like 'cavachons' my dog is a 'weechon' although they are crosses to me i still lvoe them & i know good breeders who health test so id i wanted one id get one if there healthy & happy i dont see a problem with it!

i know out of 11 people 4 replied i asked them about all health tests including the mri scanning that joddee taold me about the ones that did reply jsut said ther epups are vet checked after, that isnt good enough for me for a pure breed.

my dog now has pure breeds parents who are both fully breed health tested and his a cross!

just shows you really doesnt it!

I work at boarding kennels where we mix dogs. CKCS are generally very good with other dogs. It does depend on how you bring them up, but most are very good. If anything, a lot of CKCS get stressed at the kennels and choose to hump other dogs... This is the most antisocial behaviour I've seen from a cav.

My Bonnie, (cavalier) was brought into our home when we had a collie x called Cesar and they were best friends. 2 years after ceasar died we got another collie x called Rocky and they are friends too. xxx
