Lozzi a Lab fits the type of the pit bull, there is no standard as such, as its not a breed in the uk, I'll try and look up what they look for, I've read it before, but can't remember all of it :)

you are right but the standards are so vague that any dog that is supposedly half pit would fall short of the law

This is what the law classes as a pit-type, how many breeds or type fall under it??

    ears folded forward or sideways

    muzzle not pointed

    broad wedge shaped skull

    straight solid front legs

    broad deep ribcage

    well muscled thigh

    long hind legs

tail - low down in hind quaters hangs like "pump handle"

    short single smooth coat

    height 45 - 55 cms

I can't provide a link, it came from a bully breed website :)

The most worrying thing for me is that they are telling people its a staffy/pit cross on a social networking site. That's a sure fire way to get an innocent animal seized and destroyed. As far as I'm concerned BSL is draconian and wrong, but that said, I know the game, if my dog was a pitbull I would never, ever refer to it as such, no matter how much I trusted that person.

I dont know what you mean as a dog that stands at around 18 inch and is light framed is the original stafford not a dog that stands at 14 inch weighs 40 pounds and is bug eyed and heavy boned as it has had a bit of pug blood infused in it is not a dog fit for purpose if you look into the history of staffords have been lighter and more terrier like various shapes and sizes remeber its not necessarly the parents that affect the prodgeny its the relatives behind them it is also a known fact that after the first world war there was a lot of dogs passed of as staffords and dogs down from these were registered with the KC.

Also when we say not great examples is this from a show point of view or a working point also there are many people trying to promote a healthier stafford and are well balanced health tested dogs.
Just because it has longer legs and is lighter framed dont make it poorly bred it could of come out of two gr chs and are we saying people who breed dogs to the original standard iresponsible?? also the likes of gentleman jim,eve etc are poor examples as they were not short enough??

sorry but will have to agree to disagree, in rescue see plenty of badly bred staffies - be it short squat ones or tall gangly ones.

I would deem my own stafford to be og what i like as a nice stafford - stocky but fairly longish legged. I dont overly like the new show standard nor do I like to see more terrier skinny ones.

I am by no means an expert but the more shapes and sizes they come in the more you realise how badly some of them are bred in the sense that its not done responsibly. which in this case there is no way it has been if they are being sold as half pit!

see i will have to disagree with some of it as I have found the more terrier skinny type as you put it to have a lot more drive which others are lacking .I will agree about the half pit/stafford breeding being iresponsible as for different shapes and sizes Im afraid that it what the breed has been made up for hundreds of years as they put the gamest terrier they could find over bulldogs and it was not just one type of terrier as with game dog breeding,It is not that easy to eliminate one type out of a gene pool and there will always be different sizes if you look below this is 3 types of staffordshire bull terrier

One would be hard pushed to find any breed, or "type" with even one entirely unique feature not found in any other breed or type.

It is the TOTAL sum of all the parts that make a dog a particular breed, or type.

To be considered a Pitbull type under the Dangerous Dogs Act a dog has to closely conform to virtually all the characteristics of the breed standard of the American PitBull Terrier, as defined by a particularly issue and Volume of a magazine published by the American Dogs Breeders Association (ADBA), as decreed in the Dunne and Brock Court Judgement.

There are other Pitbull standards but they do not count within the UK DDA.

Many of the features you list above are not in the ABDA standard, which is very long and was written in a very verbose fashion. It includes a large number of features of various parts of the dog, all of which are required to be there. Many features are comparative to each other in the same dog, not absolute measures, so the sum of the whole of the dog is supremely fit for its intended function (of fighting).

Ear size or set were considered unimportant as many owners cropped the ears of fighting dogs anyway to prevent opponents being able to use them to gain a hold.
Rangy dogs were at an advantage over equal-weight stocky dogs, due to longer reach, but hind legs were not specified as being required to be "long", nor was the dog to be rangy at the expense of strength. Dogs were paired for fights on weight, as with human fighters. There is no minimum or maximum size or weight in the ABDA standard. Etc, etc.

The ABDA standard has very many other requirements that not only rules dogs in, but it also rules lots of dogs out, hence a lot of successfully defended or dropped/discontinued cases.

However there is certainly no point in "advertising" a dog as having Pitbull content.

the most worrying bit is that they have a toddler & a 3 month old baby!

Purely moronic. I'm American and I've seen many well tempered, friendly pit bulls that are great with kids and other people. These breeds are naturally people friendly and if bred and raised right, would never ever hurt a child. What I'm worried about is why they want an illegal breed. A pit bull at that. Sounds like crappy breeding, so I am concerned as well.

yep agree here we go again! what you ment to say was it resembles a PB but it is a staffy cross and if a puppy and properly socialised will be a remarkable dog, its the human who shoots the dog (so to speak) not the breed! :(

I don't think it's the dog you need to worry about hun...it's the person who will report him if he continues to say he has a pit bull.
I had to tell a girl a few months ago not to call her dog a pit bull (I think it was a pit cross too) and always say it's a staffie cross.:-(

I have not long had a staff x lab, I did not know that I could potentially have her seized?

A lot of people often mistake my dog Lexi as a pitbull cross. However she is Bulldog/Boxer - American Bulldog/Boxer. My vet told me that often these crosses come out with Pitbull like characteristics and often get mistaken for Pitbull crosses unfortunately.

there is no more reason to worry about the kids with this dog, in fact less, i have seen a PB have a little girl trip over and land on him when he was led in the park, he just wagged his tail, my dogs would have growled, and not been happy.

exactly they have probably picked the perfect dog for them

I have concerns about anyone who feels the need to brag that their dog is even part pit bull.

Because I think that they represent the sort of people who have resulted in all these poor staffies ending up in rescues and shelters.

Would it not be lovely if everyone who wanted a dog wanted to do what they could for the dog? And not own the dog for what it can do to 'enhance' their so called status?

Tbh I love the look of aptb their stature I am old enough to have been around a few before ban so that's at a young age n they are same as staffs with kids n people.

Their instinct is dog aggression not human aggression, however as a pup n juvenile they can get quite boistrous n test limits so should never be left alone with baby same as any other dog

I grew up from the age of 3 years old with Pitbuls & non of our pitbuls were aggressive with other dogs, we had 4 pitbulls 3 GSD's & 5 cats they all got on together, we had the pitbulls first then 4 years later the GSD's came to live with us & the cats a year later.
Any dog no matter what breed with attack another dog if they have been trained to do so.

I'm sorry but dog aggression is a trait for this breed not every dog will have it, selective breeding can help but it's always their,

Not everyone will have it and a pit that has not been trained to fight can still be dog aggressive, and I disagree that ANYdog will attack if trained most don't have the drive and gameness of the aptb and couldn't even be trained to do so....

It's great u never had any issues but there are too many story's where ppl leae them home alone with other family pets "they've been fine playing together." and "never shown any" aggression" common things said but when return home a dog is dead injured blood everywhere

Like I say responsible owner would not leave them unsupervised around other dogs the what if is not worth it. You are it's protector you should not do anything that puts your dog at unnecessary risk no mater how small
