On Tuesday of last week our Frenchy gave birth to 2 pups. All was going well but on Monday of this week the smaller of the two pups would not feed the other larger pup was doing well. Worried we took mother and pups to the vets on Tuesday. The vet checked checked all and tried to get the smaller pup to feed and tried sugar water to stimule the pup, she took the temperature of both pups and the smaller one was very low 33. The vet told us we should try to milk the mother into the pups mouth drop by drip but but would be a hard task keeping the pup alive. Sadly there was no change and later that day the small pup died. Since birth the larger remaining pup has been doing well. Feeding fine. Throughout the early hours this morning and the rest of today the pup is now also been refusing to latch on to mum. We're now quite concerned. Weve tried sugar water and it doesnt seem to work. Weve been milking mum and the pup is at least swallowing when we do this but we are worried. Anyone got any advice?
Has this puppy's temperature gone low as well? Is the room that they are in warm enough? Do you think this could be due to an infection? Is puppy weeing and pooping normally? I would be back in touch with the vet, but I wouldn't want to have to sit in a busy waiting room with Mum and puppy - perhaps an appointment where you could be seen straight away - or maybe a call-out.
