    Mini vs. Standard Schnauzer?

Just a query my OH came up with - he checked the size and thought that a Standard is not very much larger than a mini??? Are there any temperament differences to take into account.

I'm still looking for a breeder! One lady who lives fairly locally limits her two bitches to one litter per year and they will not be due for another until late this year.

Not quite made my 20 posts yet either, but getting there!

Think you will find it much more difficult to get a standard if that's what you decide on.

We meet someone with a mini and he used to have a standard one and he said that was a lovely dog and he wanted another one but his wife said no wanted something smaller. I think the smaller ones can be noisier, the middle size ones need a job to do I've been told.

I always think medium size dogs are the healthiest but I am biased!

My Kerry Blues are always being mistaken for standards, I often get "Oh my friend/neighbour/relative has one of those in the smaller size" and I reply "These only come in 1 size!"

When we did meet a standard black schnauzer it did look quite similar to Parker who is about 15.5KG if that's any help.

Hi - Thanks Kerryowner! I had to Google Kerry Blue - gorgeous looking dogs and I should imagine do look similar, apart from the colour. Rare as hen's teeth??

I may look at SCGB and find out about the health aspect.

Yes they are quite rare (I like it that way!) as I have seen about 10 in the 7 years we have had them. They are not for everybody but are more of a specialist breed. I think standard Schnauzers would probably be more of an easier breed than Kerries. My husband and I like standard Schnauzers but we wouldn't agree on the colour if we got one as I like blacks and he likes salt and pepper!

A couple of years ago I met a girl with a Giant Schnauzner. She was very surprised that I knew what it was :) They are lovely

Hi, we own both sizes and temperament wise they vary allot.
Minis are quite lively, like to be with you, busy little dogs but they can be vocal when exited. Standards are more independent, perhaps need a stronger willed owner (though both sizes will take you for a ride) but are also incredibly smart and loyal.
Standards have an easier care coat although being bigger they will probably be more to get professionally groomed.
Health wise there all no required tests for Standards. Minis have to be eye screened(BVA not just local vet) both parents should be eye tested annually and puppies should be screened buy 8 weeks.
If you contact the breed clubs they will help you in finding reputable breeders.

    Good luck

    I have a standard.
I would say standards like to be kept entertained and have enormous amounts of energy especially in their earlier years. Mine is 5 now and I would say she has just about calmed down to a 'normal' level.
They make a good guard dog, although it's all bark and no bite and are constantly alert to the point of being nosey
