There is a new law coming in all over Europe that is already in place in the UK, no puppy can be brought over before the age of 15 weeks Well this wouldn't be much problem with most breeds for me, but as the Azawakh are such a highly strung breed that need a LOT of socialisation I think I would prefer to have them as soon as possible to complete at least some socialisation myself. So it looks like I may be waiting for a UK litter of Azas Now I do love Sloughi, but they are too similar to the Azawakh for my liking and I would much rather wait it out for an Aza. I really do like Afghan Hounds too but the coat takes wayyyyy too much care for me. Now the Saluki, they are a breed I adore and the seem like they will live well with an Azawakh, so it looks like my first dog of my own may be a Saluki. I do adore these dogs, I do prefer the smooth coated over the long coated but I think the feathered variety have an edge in their beauty and are a lot more common. So big news, Katie may not own an Aza first :O
There is some, first one joined us in 2005, the UK breed club might be a good place to ask on numbers http://uksilkenwindhoundclub.org/home
Katie - one day you will have your Aza - you just might have to wait a bit longer, but you will have one, one day, of that I am sure.
No ethical breeder would ship a puppy abroad under the age of 16 weeks anyway. I was told by Gwylim's breeder that any puppies he sends overseas undergo a health check the day before they're shipped to make sure they're fit to travel. I have no idea of the law in other EU countries but in Hungary by law, all puppies have to be vaccinated against Rabies by the age of 16 weeks. Failure to do so results in a heavy fine and the puppy being put into quarantine. However, in my experience no reputable vet will vaccinate a puppy younger than 12 weeks and I know my own vet prefers not to vaccinate until 15 weeks old although if the puppy was going abroad he'd probably vaccinate at 13 weeks to allow for the three weeks before the puppy can travel As for socialisation, both my two dogs were raised in families with young children and other dogs, but neither of them had any experience of the outside world because certainly in Hungary you're advised until the puppy has received all their vaccinations, not to expose your puppy to any illness it might catch by walking along roads or coming into contact with dogs other than your own. And to register for obedience classes you're going to be asked to produce the dog's medical records to show the dog has received all the necessary vaccinations. The point I'm making is that irrespective of the breed, if you're buying from an ethical breeder in another EU country you won't be able to take delivery of your puppy until it's 16 weeks old, which IMO is the way it should be.
It's always been 15 weeks the earliest you can bring a pup to the UK as you say. In regards to socialisation if you trust the breeder then there should be no reason why they can't provide the early on-going socialisation your puppy needs. See I didn't realise that 15 weeks was the earliest, which is a big shame. I would want to do socialisation myself really, plus Aza's bond so closely I would love to have them from a younger age to bond in with me, especially for my first Aza. 12 weeks would be fine as that is the ending of the socialisation period so I could get at least a bit done myself. But if it means waiting for me Aza in the UK then I will wait. In the mean time I will find myself a beautiful Saluki to fall in love with
Ah right sorry, for some reason I thought Katie meant they could only be sold here (even from UK breeders) from 15 weeks of age. Duh
