New puppy for family with older dog

Hello! We have a 8-year-old female berner, and we're thinking about getting a new berner puppy this Christmas. Before we take this step, however, we're wondering if anyone has any advice/experience with this situation, especially with how an older berner might react to having a new berner puppy introduced into the family.

Our 8-year old is typically extremely loving, friendly and easy going, but also somewhat "high maintenance" in the emotional support department. She loves attention and often demands it. At 8 years old, she also seems to be slowing down a bit. She generally seems more apprehensive about things, doesn't like to take walks as much as she used to, and is more limited in what she can do physically.

Is getting a second berner puppy in this situation a good or bad idea? Any opinions re: how our older dog might accept/interact with the puppy? Will she be jealous or territorial, or happy to have a new playmate? All advice appreciated.

    Thanks!

I suspect that you know that BMD's are not a long-lived breed which may be the reason that your girl is starting to slow down and show her age. You say she is loving and friendly, so there is no reason why she should not be able enjoy the company of another Berner, - as long as you can protect her from too much ragging from the puppy, and from those needle sharp teeth.
