she is lovely, just ever so slightly mental. Honestly, if she had been my first rough, I would never own another one. She had a terrible start to life (was a show dog, but the people who owned her did nothing with her. No walking, no socialising, no playing, nothing other than the back garden and shows) and still now, at nearly 9 has more issues than any dog ive ever met before!

That's awful. Strangely, my friend has a Labrador with the same story almost. He's from a so-called 'top' breeder in the UK. But apparently his tail was less than perfect so they did not show him.

When he was one and a half they bred from him, but other than that he was neglected. My friend's father ended up getting him because his original Lab from the breeder had died young.

When he met this 'failed' show Lab, the dog was skin and bones, and a nervous wreck. Now the dog is almost ten and wonderful - but he still has problems with children and lunges at them when he sees them.

Lovely that you've had Rough Collies in the family - were they all Tri Colours?

I know..Even worse was that her original breeders had no idea of how she was being kept. They are lovely, but the good thing is, everyone knows who they are, and no one will sell them a dog.

Bracken looks like my RC - Laddie. Beautiful :)

The only type of RC that I have never actually seen in 'real life' is a Blue Merle.

Our RC had the most wonderful temperament. Terribly delicate stomach though - for the first year he could only eat boiled chicken and rice. I can still remember my mum in the kitchen, up to her elbows in bits of chicken! :)

I have promised myself another huge Sable and White boy (from a proper breeder, and with the true collie temperament) I dont know if its me imagining it, but the Northern breeders seem to produce dogs that I think look like proper Roughies...some of the ones ive seen down here look like Poms! (and that is not a compliment!)

I know that the few RCs I've seen have been much smaller than my dog, but with huge coats, especially around their heads. Quite different from our dog who was a really big fellow :)

I spent quite a few months looking for a breeder who bred for old-fashioned, large rough collies (without the huge coat) and unfortunately couldn't find a single one :-( If you do manage to find one, please let me know

My first dog as a kid was a RC, called Lassie. She had a cracking temperament and was the size the should be. My mum now has a RC here he is with my girls, but he is like a large sheltie. Its a real shame that they have lost their size in this country. Canada and USA still have the 'Lassie' sized dogs

Do you think Shelties have also got smaller? I met an American bred Sheltie last year, brought over by someone who came to live in the UK, and he was bigger than ours here, and more substantial looking too, not as fragile-seeming. He also had fully pricked ears not tipped which (I was told) is accepted in the USA.

BTW - who's the handsome dog in the background?

My dad & siblings always had RC's growing up, very original names like Laddie & lassie LOL. but I haven't seen one for years outside of crufts.

If you go to agility shows you will see many shelties!!

I think they are lovely but have been told they are hard to come by in their 'original' form , if it is at all possible, in the UK.

I've got my second Rough at the moment, he's 11 and is still as sweet as when he was born, I had his mother too, she paid the price for some pretty hefty inbreeding in that she had some pretty crazy behaviour.
They are sweet, intelligent dogs, they don't suffer fools lightly, are aloof to most strangers until you've given you're approval! Protective too, my boyfriend and I were play-wrestling once and I shrieked and my boy did not like it one bit, barking angrily until the other half stopped!
My bitch knew when my sister in law was pregnant before any of us did, including my sister in law, for both babies she had and remained both in love and protecting of her and the children up until she had to be pts last summer. She was also far far more tolerant of the children tugging at her and poking her, if we'd done any of that she would have given us a warning nip telling us to get lost (she never broke the skin). Her son that we still have is a gentle giant, and her other son is owned by a lady that works at an old peoples home and apparently he is quite the angelic therapy dog, making friends with all the residents and rather enjoying the biscuits (they do like their treats)!!

I think the hair does put prospective owners off, though I often get comments when I'm out saying - 'oh he's just been groomed hasn't he?!' - and they are surprised when I say not yet this week and that I do all the grooming myself. I find a weekly good brush through and a little trim is all it takes, which for such magnificent results is pretty darned good!
Though if they are kept outside moulting apart from once a year isn't a problem, it's central heating that does it. Our friends who show them have about 16 of them and were our first encounter with the breed, I had all 16 and some shelties of all colours fawning over me while I was wearing dark clothes and I came away without a hair on me! They all lived in very nice kennels outside, with a lovely yard and a large garden with plants and trees. They were simply amazing! Keep them indoors with heating and they will moult
    a lot!
There are still some excellent breeders out there who stick to the true nature of the breed, but there are also a lof of breeders who haven't done the breed any favours either with a lot now looking like balls of cotton wool on legs with piggy eyes and dodgy temperaments rather than dogs of impassive beauty that could do a days running. When my dear old boy goes, I'll definitely be getting another one....or several.....they are definitely the dogs for me!

Poppy hates being groomed, so I will admit to sending her off to be done every 6 weeks or so.
