I like staffies, as I like all dogs, but I don't think I would choose to have one. A good friend of mine who lives in UK has a sweet little staffie girl, and she gives the best staffie-snogs  and goes all wriggly all over when you speak to her, like: "helloooo stranger, let me lick you to death".

    Today's newspapers :-

A toddler's face was ripped apart by a Staffordshire bull terrier as she played in a pub beer garden.

Kira Neal was at her mother's side when the fierce dog leapt on her and clamped its jaws around her face.

The 22-month-old girl screamed out in agony as one side of her face was ripped off. Shocked drinkers then tried to pull the dog away.

Ellie Lawrenson was killed earlier this year after a dangerous dog attacked her

Kira was rushed to hospital in an ambulance and her face was sewn up with more than 60 stitches.

Last night her mother, Sam Hallowes, 26, described the moment the dog pounced on her daughter in the garden of the Famous Old Pines pub in Bournemouth, Dorset, on Saturday at 4.10pm.

"I remember the dog was nice one minute and then it's mood completely changed," she said. "I just couldn't understand what had happened. It was completely out of the blue.

"I was in a state of shock and just froze. I remember Kira getting passed over to me and I was holding on to her as tight as I could. A dog like that shouldn't be allowed in public. I just want to see it put down and the owners banned from owning an animal again."

Miss Hallowes, from Bournemouth, was enjoying lunch with her sister and friends when Kira was attacked. The bull terrier was sitting down, tied to a lead when it suddenly went for her.

The report I read on BBC simply stated a terrier .............. didn't say it was a stafford.

i never thought about it much before today... and a bl**dy one, off lead... my three onlead and not even looking at it.. launched at Freya trying to bite over and over again. It got a swift couple of kicks from my son and in the confusion... little Noah, got loose and ran for it. We were in London... dropping our son off to spend time with a friend... didn`t know the area... trying to find out which way he`d gone. Terrible thoughts going through my mind... eventually, my son managed to catch up with him.... still VERY ANGRY!!

"Blame the deed and not the breed" is always the statement rolled out on these occasions.
It is generally accepted that small dogs get away with far more than bigger dogs because they are considered 'cute' and many owners do not train them to be as well behaved as large dogs.
I fully accept that small dogs can be more of a problem than large dogs.
However, how many small dogs are capable of causing such terrible injuries and occasionally death to human beings. Children being ripped apart, for God's sake !
What are we to make of these horrendous attacks ? Do you have an answer ?

How many stories do we hear of Jack Russells (sorry to any owners out there), biting the faces of little kids though? Quite a few! Staffies get the raw end of the deal every time. If the owner had been responsible, the dog shouldn't have been left unattended. I would never leave my stafford in a position like that.

Prevention is ALWAYS better than a cure

Well I've been on the receiving end of a bite from a small terrier, and I've seen the injuries a cocker can cause to a child so I really think it's deed not breed.
If we go down the path of dogs that have the 'potential' to cause the greatest damage then basically any breed larger than a Yorkie would need to be banned!
I have even heard of a cat that accidentally killed it's owner.

well said. IMO, any dog with teeth is capable of causing terrible injuries, and the last I heard, teeth weren't exclusive to bull breeds :smt002

these are the type of comments that drive me mad! you've obviously never owned a staffy and are never likely to own a staffy! but a staffy is a very very popular dog which is one of the reason they are always in the news! any bad press and people jump on the wagon to put them down. as far as i'm concerned they are one of the best dogs with children that i've seen? i would never leave mine alone with my kids but then again i wouldn't leave any dog alone with my kids? i know this is off topic about staffords but my foreman was bitten on the hand by a ckcs and had to have surgery! he was only going to stroke the dog?

    It drives me mad also,
We were at a show on Saturday with Tyler and he got nipped by a JR who was intent on killing him.Tyler has never ever shown any aggression to any dog or person.
Now I could have easily given him full lead and let him defend himself,Sorry I didn't I pulled him away, gave the owner of the JR a teling off and walked away.
You would not believe the amount of times dogs have had a go with him.I doubt very much, infact I know he'd never start a fight.

Now Meg is totally different, she's great around people, not so good with other dogs,I accept that,it's part of her make up and breed history, but I keep her onlead away from other dogs but I can't be responsible for other idiots not putting their dogs on lead when asked,we have had some very close calls.

This has made me angry also. BLAME THE DEED AND NOT THE BREED is the way forward. There is good and bad in all breeds so should we ban all dogs so there will never be another problem. My two sons own Staffs they have been brought up with their children, and I can tell you now they are soft and sweet with the children they just love playing with the kids. In fact they prefer to be with the children than adults.

    Ain't that the truth lol,
Our two are as daft as a brush with kids, infact Tyler has to join in with everything the kids are doing, including playing in the pool,I swear that dog thinks he's human!

My young niece was BLINDED by a Jack Russell Terrier is that horrific enough for you? It just goes to show that any dog whatever their breed is capable of causing very serious damage to a child or person.
