About 4/5 years ago I had a lot to do with a Ute who had ended up in rescue. The owner had not wanted to return her to the breeder, the breeder tried to get the dog from the rescue and was unsuccessfull. The adoption contracts are not worth the paper they are written on. The breeder has since been done by the RSPCA.

I was very taken with the dog and began to look into the type. What I found was frightening. People didn't just own dogs and bitches---they were being sold pairs of dogs and calling them stud dogs and brood bitches. The new owners were told that the dogs could soon be registered with the KC. The breeders all had American Indian or wolf type names. They were selling a new age commodity---a dream of sharing life with a wolf---an ego extension. They also got a lot of dogs very quickly and quickly became 'experts'.

I said then that in 5 years I would be able to pick the dog I wanted from rescue, which is what has happened.

I think as the original breeders begin to realise that maybe the money can't be made as easily and they get pups not sold they may drop out of the type and that will be the opportunity for the people who would like to move the dogs on and make sure health testing is done and pups are raised in clean conditions and socialised as much as possible.

Being the new lurchers won't be a bad thing, there was a gap in the market for a healthy GSD type which was not as flighty as the BSD and not as independant as the Spitz breeds.

The future lies with the caring owners who will look for decent breeders next time and with those decent breeders.

There will always be bad breeders---there are in every type/breed of dog.

HI Murph, my personal opinion is all dogs and breeding dogs have to be tested and only added to stud and breeding register if they have a clean bill of health and low/good hip scores. Dogs have to bred with the best temperament and type and this has to remain consistent. A database should be held and in time we will then have at least 4 gen pedigrees with healthy, happy (good temperament) dogs. Now dogs with health problems including bad temperaments or those who are very nervous shouldn't be bred from. This is all just my humble opinion. This is what the NIS are striving for as we can't turn the clock back. So I guess it is starting over again from the progeny we have out there now and we have some stunning NI's with beautiful temperaments.

I do believe that the NIS, BUA and the Tamaskan groups will all get together for the betterment of the breed and this is already happening with the NIS and the BUA and long may this continue!!!
