Is an akita okay for a first time owner?

Hi, I am planning to get an Akita Inu puppy who is socialized with both children, a ton of people and other dogs including several other breeds. I have plenty of time and energy to train and further socialize, I've done all the research on nutrition, behavior, grooming, training, health issues and alpha behavior. Yet I am still not sure if it's okay to have an Akita as first time dog since I have never had any experience with owning a dog except for taking care of my uncles bully for a day.

Have you spoken to Akita owners? Have you spoken to Akita breeders? I think the advice would be 'no'.

I've had my AA for a year now so obviously I myself have a lot of learning to do, but he was not my first dog. I would definitely say that an Akita is not a good choice for a first time dog owner, while doing plenty of research is commendable it is truly no substitute for hands on experience. We've all learned so much from our first dog on what to do as well as what not to do, and if the first dog is an Akita the potential mistakes we make with them will not be forgiving. I'd suggest a labrador or something along those lines, they are a far more forgiving breed. You want your first dog to be a bit easier to train, easier to groom, and a social butterfly. The Akita is the antithesis of all these things :)

Really it is a case of your lifestyle and ability to put in the required time.
Go to a show if you can, talk with breeders/trainers/read.

There not a easy first time owner breed, and not for everyone.

I'd say that aren't the best breed for a first time dog owner, I was an experienced dog owner but still found that the Akitas had to be handled completely different to the Gsd.
They are not an easy breed, can be very challenging and many are dog aggressive,
best to visit a number of dog shows Chat to the exhibitors/breeders don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Unfortunately, NO puppy, irrespective of breed comes ready socialised with children, people or other dogs so in that respect you're going to have to re-evaluate your expectations!

As has already been said Akita's aren't the easiest breed for a first time owner particularly one who's only experience is of occasionally caring for someone else's dog, If I were you I'd look for a much easier breed and save yourself a lot of potential heartache!

There are plenty to choose from!
