My 5 year old Akita did not blow her winter or spring coat this year. Her hair has stayed short and she isnt shedding at all. I am concerned that it might be a medical issue. Has anyone else experienced this? Typically I am sweeping up hair all year.
I have never experienced anything like that. One of my Akitas blows his coat at least 4 times a year. Please let us know if you learn why this is happening.
Most likely a hormonal cause. Is she lacking energy too? If so, it might be a thyroid problem. Agree with the others, a vet will diagnose.
@who owns who Just a note to ask how you are, and how you are coping with this spell of hot weather? I hope the Akitas are well.
@CaroleC I’m okay and so are my dogs. I live in a coastal mountain range and we haven’t really gotten that hot so far this summer. I haven’t checked in on this site in a long time as I got fed up with being logged in, trying to make a post, only to be told I wasn’t logged in. This kept happening again and again so I decided I didn’t need the frustration. Hopefully I don’t have that happen with this post. I hope all the (few) regular users are well. Thanks for asking. Edit: Amazing it worked
That has happened to me a few times recently too. I tried to re-register and couldn't as my details were those of an existing member! It settled back after a few days. Glad you are all OK though.
@who owns who - It is good to "see" you Marc, and I am glad to hear you and the dogs are doing well. I was hoping you would turn up as I wanted to tell you that someone on the Moshav has an Akita just like Bandit. I think he must live quite a way up the road and I do not know many people from up thataway. I first noticed it a month or so back, and have only seen it on a Saturday - with no cars allowed on Shabbat it is the only day I seem to see people out walking their dogs. It is the first Akita I have seen here. It is rare that I see any dogs being taken out on any other day - the only dogs I do see are ones that have either got loose, or the unwanted dogs that are dumped on the Moshav by people from town. Luckily the Akita totally ignores Tikva, as she does tend to bark to warn off most dogs who look a bit too close for her liking.
