Hey everyone, I'm considering getting a Chow Chow and noticed their prices vary a lot. I've seen listings anywhere from $500 to over $3000! Can anyone shed light on why there's such a big difference? Does it depend on factors like lineage, the price of Chow Chow varies, and breeder reputation, location, or something else? I'm especially interested in understanding how to ensure I'm paying a fair price without compromising on the health and well-being of the pup. Any advice or experiences would be greatly appreciated. Looking forward to your insights! Thanks!
Exactly as you suspect. The lowest prices are likely to be unregistered, or non-officially registered puppies. The quality of the breeding stock, the cost of stud fees, and registration with the AKC, will all contribute to the next level of pricing. I'm not in the US but imagine that like the UK there are levels of health testing too. X-rays for hip status, certification of eye-health, and dna testing for breed specific hereditary factors, will be carried out by the very best breeders, and come at an extra cost. Browse your national breed club pages online, usually a great source of information. Https://chowclub.org is the Parent club.
