Hello All. We have a 7 month old male ASD

    Hello Everyone,
I have a 7-month old male pure bred ASD.
Tengri is a luv bug and highly intelligent, and of course he's mega-energetic. He is becoming a barker at night, which the neighbors don't appreciate
He is with us primarily to protect our goats from coyotes at night.
I'm wondering if any of the members here have had this issue of their ASDs barking out at night or during the day uncontrollably, and I'd greatly appreciate any and all advice regarding how to train my boy not to bark, well at least not as much, at night.
    Thanks in advance!

Hi , great pic , if he is actually sleeping on a rock in the middle of a stream that’s pretty awesome :)

I have liked this breed for a while because of their guarding livestock and being a working dog with a job, although they are not too common in Australia .

although I don’t own them. I expect that is part of their job which they rely on to alert predators to their presence and their hard wired instinct , from what I have seen they also work in teams.

sorry if I’m stating the obvious here,

I would also imagine a young dog finding their voice , and perhaps dealing with building confidence at this early stage could be a factor.

I have an 8 month old pup who likes barking pretty often as he is finding his voice also , and is using it to talk a lot basically.

Page 84 speaks about excessive barking , although the entire thing is very much worth reading and put things in perspective for me

A free dog book! What's not to like?
It looks interesting and I am going to read this, but on a quick skim through I thought Chapter 2 was quite important too - particularly the age stages and the 'window' for bonding with livestock.

@PieroDucati Does Tengri live with the goats 24/7, and are they housed at night?

Thank you for this invaluable resource. I'll definitely devour this!
We are working up a urban type homestead, so the goats and Tengri are outside most of the time (they have 2 separate houses). When storms hit, we bring them inside our house.
Tengri settles quite well at night in the paddock with the goats.
Around 3:00 to 4:30am, he'll get off barking at different things.
We appreciate his instinct to do this, but our neighbors not so much.
People tell us to go with an e-collar to train him away from barking, but we'd rather not do that if we can find another solution.

    CaroleC and Malka like this.
Please don’t use an e-collar, I would teach him what "shhhh" means or whatever command you want to use
