In Scottish legend, Kelpies are horses. I wonder why he chose the name for a dog?

In one part of our KC Working Trials, all dogs over 15" have to scale 6 foot. They start from a halt within a set distance. Once sent, they must drop into a wait on the blind side, then recall back to handler, over the scale.
Eddie the Beagle was actually just a midges over 15", but he was allowed to do his scale at 5 foot. He was only the second Beagle to qualify CD Ex.



This was Ed practising at home.
Merry never competed in Trials, but she could do it too.

Eddie looks like a legend too Carole .

So it does come from over that general way .

its lists Kelpie size as between 15 and 20 inches too .Though most people would not care about the standard so much as a dogs performance here.
Quite a bit of variation .
When I was a kid I trained my cattle dog , border collie cross to jump and climb ladders .
She was brilliant , can not remember the exact height now though she did go in the jumping contest at the local town show once.
She ran around the jump to get up the side of the truck in the end as it got too high .

we had a wooden garage door she could get up , may have been 8 ft or so , Though I am only guessing .It was high .
Have not trained a dog to jump high for a long time , for escaping reasons , though they do jump up on different things in their training , not fences generally .

Tweed, my old rescue Lurcher type had lived on the streets and would jump 6 ft to escape from a yard or garden. My Working Trial friend suggested that I turned it to an advantage and trained her jumping skill. She was a free spirit and a nightmare to train, but qualified at 9.5 years with full marks on her agility section. 6 ft scale, 9 ft long and 3 ft clear.
When the Kennel Club Championships were held at our club, my friend had this made as a poster as part of the decoration of the base walls.

I think scale is the operative word as i remember my old dog when she used to jump .
She did use the boards nailed on the wooden door to get up and over , so it was not a flat wall .

the highest dogs scaling a fence I can remember , were 2 whippets that followed a kid to school .

He put them in the tennis court and shut the gate to trap them from running away .

they jumped then climbed the tennis court mesh fence and escaped !

The “ Huntaway “ is a New Zealand breed of sheep dog .

I saw no listing for the breed so will poke them in here for a neighborly mention next to the Australian Kelpies.

New Zealand being very hilly and mountainous required a specialist type of dog to do the job .



here is what they have done to keep them a dedicated working breed , and saving them from confirmation and breeding for show looks over there.

“It is the opinion of the New Zealand Sheepdog Trial Association that a Huntaway should never be shown, due to the large variance in colour, type and size and the inability to prove in a show ring their core (and only) task of working stock. It is the opinion of the New Zealand Sheepdog Trial Association that a New Zealand Huntaway should not be kept solely as a pet. No changes to the official breed standard of the New Zealand Huntaway will be made without consultation with the New Zealand Sheepdog Trial Association.[11]”
