Just at glance, how closely related to a leonberger are they?
Leonbergers were made from crossing breeds. Estrella Mountain Dog is older Portuguese breed.
I knew Leonbergers where from cross breeding, but by looks, I would say this was the foundation of them.
Maybe? I've not seen it mention when I'd read about them BUT that doesn't mean it isn't so. As I'm sure not every breed used to create them was included and I've read a couple different variations on breeds used.
Origin of the Leonberger
The development of the Leonberger is credited to Heinrich Essig, a citizen of Leonberg, Germany who, it is said, wished to create a lion-like dog to complement the heraldic lion on his towns coat of arms.
